I Know It's OverI Know It's Over by C.K. Kelly Martin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

eeehh.

This book got wonderful reviews, but I was unable to connect with the main character. Martin did a great job of exploring the male emotional side of abortion and she gave many of her characters depth. Many readers will love this book; I'm just not one of them.

Help Pets Enjoy the Holidays!

There are many things teens can do to make the world a better place for pets, and some of them start right at home! If you have a pet, remember that holiday decorations and special foods can pose problems for your pet. Here are a few hints to keep your special Fluffy or Fido safe: a) secure your Christmas tree well, perhaps to the wall or ceiling, to prevent a curious canine from tipping it over; b) hang non-breakable ornaments near the bottom of the tree, so kitty can't break them; c) tinsel can be deadly when eaten by a dog, so don't put it on the tree; d) pine needles can cause health problems if ingested by a dog or cat, so regularly sweep up fallen needles; e) misltetoe, poinsettias, and amaryllis can be toxic, so keep your pets away from them; f) and finally, holiday sweets are fun to eat--but are not good for your dog--so keep chocolates, peppermints, candy canes, and other treats well away from your pet.

A Spellbinding Tale for Fantasy Fans!

Inkspell (Inkheart, #2)IInkspell by Cornelia Funke

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This second novel in the Inkworld trilogy is as captivating and gorgeously written as the first (Inkheart), securing author Cornelia Funke's place in that modern pantheon of fantasy writers for teens that includes Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, J. K. Rowling, and Philip Reeve. As the book begins, the Inkworld is broached by Meggie, who turns out to have the power to "read" herself as well as others into the book-world created by Finoglio. Her friend Farid is desperate to follow the fire-eater Dustfinger and Meggie can't resist the opportunity also to enter the world she has dreamed about. But Farid and Meggie aren't the only ones to reenter the Inkworld: the criminal-minded storyteller Orpheus "reads" the sinister Basta, the vicious Mortola, and Mo, Meggie's father, back into the story. Resa, Meggie's mother, also comes along. With careful depiction, Funke gives us the whole of Inkworld and its colorful, brave, and sometimes evil inhabitants. Finoglio, the aged storyteller, is particularly well drawn. But then so are Orpheus, Meggie, Farid, Violante, the Adderhead, and so many characters. I won't say more about the plot--it's quite complicated to explain anyway. But if you ever wondered what happens to the characters after you put down a thrilling book you've just been reading, this and the other Inkworld books are the captivating answer!
